Rotate & Flip Image Online
Fix sideways phone pictures and mirror images for layouts in a few clicks.
Quarter turns and mirrors, then a new PNG
Rotate Image turns the bitmap by 90 degrees left or right, or flips it horizontally or vertically. There is no angle field. You cannot set 17 degrees or straighten a horizon that is off by a few degrees. Each left or right click swaps width and height, because a 4000 by 3000 landscape becomes a 3000 by 4000 portrait when you rotate it a quarter turn. Flip does not swap the sides. A horizontal flip keeps the same width and height and mirrors left with right.
Reset puts the preview back to the file you loaded. It does not reach into a file you already downloaded. The export is always a PNG named -rotated.png, even if you only flipped and did not rotate. The canvas is a new bitmap, so the old JPEG container, its EXIF orientation tag, and any camera GPS are not copied into that PNG.
That EXIF point matters. Some phones store the sensor pixels sideways and rely on an orientation tag to display them upright. Browsers usually honor the tag when they decode, so the preview here should already look upright before you touch a button. If you then rotate “because the file info said orientation 6,” you may turn an upright preview onto its side. Trust the picture on the page, not the number in a metadata panel.
| Button | Effect on the pixels |
|---|---|
| Rotate left / right | 90 degrees. Width and height swap. |
| Flip horizontal | Mirror left-right. Size unchanged. |
| Flip vertical | Mirror top-bottom. Size unchanged. |
| Reset | Back to the loaded image in this session. |
| Download | name-rotated.png. Local only. |
What this page will not fix
A crooked scan of a receipt needs a small arbitrary angle and then a crop. This tool can only offer the nearest quarter turn, which is right for a photo taken in portrait and saved as landscape, and useless for a page that is off by two degrees. After a quarter turn, use Crop Image if a black bar or a thumb entered the frame. If you also need a smaller file, the PNG from this page is lossless and often larger than the source JPEG. Compress it after the orientation is right, not before. Compressing first and rotating the damaged JPEG just bakes the artifacts in, then bakes them in again.
Flip is the one people use by accident on text. A horizontal flip makes letters backwards. That is correct behavior for a mirror selfie you want to read, and the wrong button for a document. Look at a word in the preview before you download. Vertical flip is the right move for a photo that was stored upside down, and the wrong move for a portrait you merely wanted to face the other way.
Cases that match the buttons
- A phone photo that opens on its side in an old uploader. One right or left turn, then check that faces are upright. Download the PNG.
- A mirror selfie with reversed shirt text. Horizontal flip. If the image was also sideways, rotate first, then flip, and read the preview after each click.
- A scanned page that came through upside down. Vertical flip, or two quarter turns. Two quarter turns are not the same as a vertical flip if you also needed a mirror. Watch the preview.
- A product shot for a catalog that must face left. Horizontal flip only if the object is symmetric enough that a mirror is acceptable. Watches, bags with a logo, and shoes with a labeled sole will show the logo reversed. This page cannot flip the logo back independently.
Steps
- Drop the image and look at it before you press anything. It may already be upright.
- Use left or right for a quarter turn. Each press swaps the pixel dimensions.
- Use a flip only when you need a mirror. Read any text in the preview.
- Reset if the combination went wrong. Reset is available until you leave the page. It is not inside the downloaded PNG.
- Download
-rotated.png. Crop or compress that file if the next slot needs a frame or a smaller container.
Frequently asked questions
Can I rotate by an arbitrary angle?
No. The controls are left 90, right 90, flip horizontal, flip vertical, and reset. There is no degree field and no straighten slider.
Does rotating upload the file?
No. The canvas redraw and the PNG download stay on your device.
Why did the width and height swap?
A quarter turn turns a landscape bitmap into a portrait one, or the reverse. Flips do not swap the two numbers.
Why is the new file a PNG?
The export is -rotated.png for every button on this page, including a flip with no rotation. Convert or compress that PNG if you need JPEG or WebP.
Will this honor or rewrite EXIF orientation?
The preview follows the bitmap the browser decoded. The download is a new PNG without the old orientation tag. Do not rotate a second time in another app just because a metadata panel still mentions the original tag. That tag is not in the PNG.
Can I reset a file I already saved?
Not from the PNG. Reset only restores the image loaded in the current visit. Keep the original until the turned version looks right.
