Crop Image Online
Trim distractions and frame the subject for feeds, banners and product tiles.
The crop box is a rectangle on the real pixels
Crop Image shows the photo and a box you drag. The dimmed area outside the box is discarded. The download is a PNG of the pixels inside the box, named with -cropped.png. There is no rotate handle on the box, no perspective pull, and no “content aware” fill. If a corner of the subject is outside the box, it is gone.
The ratio menu is short on purpose. Free lets every edge move. 1:1 locks a square, which is what most avatar and marketplace thumbnails want. 4:3 uses 1.3333, the old photo and slide proportion. 16:9 uses 1.7778, the widescreen frame. There is no 9:16 preset. A vertical story frame is freehand: drag a tall box, or rotate the source on the rotate page first if the camera left it sideways, then come back and crop.
The box is positioned in the displayed image, then mapped back to the source pixels. Drag inside the box to move it. The corner handle resizes it. If a ratio is locked, the resize keeps that ratio instead of letting you pull an arbitrary rectangle. Free is the only mode where width and height are independent.
| Ratio | Number used | Typical slot |
|---|---|---|
| Free | No lock | Cutting a scan, a margin, or a stray object |
| 1:1 | 1 | Avatar, product tile, square post |
| 4:3 | 1.3333 | Classic photo, many slides |
| 16:9 | 1.7778 | Video thumbnail, hero banner |
Crop before you resize
People often resize a landscape photo down and then discover the face is a speck in a square avatar. The pixel budget was spent on background. Crop to the ratio first, while you can still see which pixels you are keeping, then resize to the pixel size the slot asked for. The crop PNG is lossless and can be large. That is fine as an intermediate file. Compress it only when you know the final width.
A crop cannot add canvas. If you need padding around a logo, this is the wrong page. You would be cutting, not mounting. Collage Maker can place a picture on a white, black, or light grey field, but it is a grid of two to nine images, not a single padded export.
Cuts that match the ratios on the page
- A team headshot that includes a busy office. 1:1, with the face in the upper half of the square and the box tight enough that the monitor behind them drops out.
- A phone photo for a 16:9 video cover. Lock 16:9 and slide the box so the horizon, not the empty sky, sits where the title will go. This page does not draw the title.
- A scanned form with a black scanner lid in the margin. Free, and pull the box in until the lid is outside. You are not deskewing. If the page is rotated 2 degrees, the box still cuts a rectangle of the tilted page.
- A product on a white table for a square catalog. 1:1, then check the corners. JPEG artifacts in the white do not get cleaned. Crop only removes pixels.
Steps
- Drop one image. The crop stage appears when the decode finishes.
- Choose Free, 1:1, 4:3, or 16:9 before you spend time placing the box. Switching ratio reshapes the box.
- Drag the box onto the subject. Use the handle to scale it. Stay inside the photo. The box cannot hang off into invented pixels.
- Download
-cropped.pngand open it at 100% zoom. Softness you see there was already in the source, or it is the edge of a previous JPEG. The crop itself does not re-filter the picture beyond the canvas cut.
Frequently asked questions
Does the crop upload my image?
No. The box, the pixel copy, and the PNG download stay in the browser.
Which aspect ratios are built in?
Free, square (1:1), 4:3 (1.3333), and 16:9 (1.7778). There is no 9:16 or 3:2 button.
Can I crop to an exact pixel width?
Not by typing a number. You drag the box. If the next system wants 1200 by 1200, crop 1:1 here and set 1200 on the resize page.
Why is the PNG larger than the photo I dropped?
The cut is saved as PNG. A lossless file of most of a JPEG is often bigger than that JPEG. The dimensions are smaller. The container is heavier. Compress after you know you will not crop again.
Does cropping remove location data?
The new PNG does not carry the old EXIF container. Treat that as a side effect, not the feature. Remove Metadata is the page that exists for that job.
Can I undo a crop after download?
Only by starting again from the original. The PNG has already thrown the outside pixels away. Keep the source until you have checked the cut at full size.
