Remove Background Online
Cut out people, products and pets locally in your browser, then place them on any backdrop.
The cutout runs on your machine, after a model download
Remove Background does not ship the photo to ImageSwift. The button loads @imgly/background-removal version 1.7.0 from jsDelivr as an ES module and calls removeBackground on the file you selected. The first successful run downloads the segmentation model into the browser. That download is large, and a second photo in the same browser is usually faster because the model is already cached. A private window, a cleared cache, or another browser starts the download again.
The result is a PNG with transparency, named -no-background.png. The preview sits on a checkerboard so you can see the clear pixels. The checkerboard is not part of the file. Open the PNG in a tool that shows alpha, or place it on a colored page, before you decide the edge is clean.
The model is a guess about what is “subject” and what is “background.” Hair, glass, smoke, a white product on a white table, and a person whose shirt matches the wall are the usual failures. The page does not give you a brush to paint the mask back. If you need a hand-drawn region, that is a different tool: AI Photo Studio has a mask brush, and that one does send the image to a worker. This page does not.

Where the edge goes wrong
A cutout is a matte, not a magic eraser. Fine hair often becomes a solid blob or a halo of the old background color. Motion blur gets classified as background and disappears. A second person in the frame may be kept or dropped depending on how central they are. There is no “keep only the left person” control. If the matte is wrong, start from the original and crop tighter before you try again, so the model sees less competing clutter. Cropping is local and does not need the model.
Do not JPEG the result if you still need the transparency. JPEG will flatten it. Convert Image paints JPEG onto white. Keep the PNG until the logo, the shop template, or the slide has its own background color behind the subject.
Subjects the model handles more calmly
- A person or a product centered on a simple backdrop, for a marketplace tile. You still check the hairline and the contact shadow. The shadow is often removed with the floor, which can make the object look like it is floating.
- A logo photographed on a desk when you do not have the original vector. Expect junk around thin serifs. A real SVG from the designer is better than a cutout of a photo of a printout.
- A headshot for a slide with a colored panel behind it. The PNG lets the panel show through. Exporting to JPEG “so PowerPoint accepts it” puts white back and defeats the point.
- A group photo where you wanted one person. The model has no per-person switch. Crop to that person first, then remove the background.
Steps
- Drop one photo. Stay on the page for the first run. The status text tracks the model download.
- Wait until the checkerboard preview appears. A blank wait on a slow connection is the model, not a stuck button.
- Inspect edges at a large zoom: hair, glasses, the gap between an arm and the torso.
- Download
-no-background.png. Place it on the real background before you call it finished. - If the matte is unusable, crop a tighter original and run once more. Do not stack cutouts on cutouts.
Frequently asked questions
Is the photo uploaded to ImageSwift?
No. The segmentation runs in the browser. The first visit downloads the model from jsDelivr. The image itself is not posted to an ImageSwift API.
Why is the first image slow?
The page imports @imgly/background-removal@1.7.0 and downloads its model before removeBackground can finish. Later photos in that browser are quicker if the model is still cached.
What file do I get?
A transparent PNG named with -no-background.png. The checkerboard in the preview is only a display aid.
Can I paint back a piece the model deleted?
Not here. There is no mask brush on this page. AI Photo Studio can take a painted mask, and that edit is sent to the worker. It is not the same local cutout.
Why did the white shirt disappear into the white wall?
The model separates regions by appearance. Similar colors get merged. A tighter crop or a photo with more contrast between subject and wall behaves better. The page cannot be told “this white is the shirt.”
Can I save the cutout as a JPEG?
You can convert it afterwards, and the transparency will be gone. JPEG has no alpha. Keep the PNG if the next layout needs a clear background.
