Create a Favicon Online
Turn a simple mark into the icon sizes a website needs.
One image, a fixed set of square PNGs
Create Favicon resamples the picture you drop into square PNGs at a fixed list of pixel sizes: 16, 32, 48, 64, 128, 180, 192, and 512. The checkboxes start with 16, 32, 180, 192, and 512 turned on. 48, 64, and 128 are available and off until you tick them. Each selected size downloads as its own file, favicon-16.png, favicon-32.png, and so on. The downloads are staggered by a few hundred milliseconds so the browser does not swallow the set.
The source is drawn into a square. A wide logo becomes a square icon, which means the resample fits the image into that square rather than inventing a separate crop UI. If the mark has important detail at the edges, crop it to a square on Crop Image first, with the 1:1 lock, and only then generate icons. A 512 pixel PNG of a tiny wordmark will be a blur at 16 pixels. Favicons are blunt. Thin lines disappear. A simple mark survives.
| Size | Default | Where people usually put it |
|---|---|---|
| 16 | On | Browser tab on a normal screen |
| 32 | On | Tab and taskbar on a denser screen |
| 48 | Off | Older Windows shortcuts |
| 64 | Off | High-DPI shortcut, some desktop sets |
| 128 | Off | Larger desktop preview |
| 180 | On | Apple touch icon size |
| 192 | On | Android home-screen PNG |
| 512 | On | PWA / large install icon |
What you still have to paste into the site
The generator does not write an .ico container, an HTML <link> tag, or a web app manifest. You get PNGs. A typical tab icon uses the 32 pixel file, or both 16 and 32. The 180 pixel file is the one phones look for as an apple-touch icon. 192 and 512 are the pair most installable web apps expect in a manifest. This page will not upload them to your host. It also will not keep the animation if you dropped a GIF. You get still squares.
Transparency can survive because the files are PNG. A logo on a checkerboard in your editor should stay clear in the icon, which is what you want on a browser tab that is not white. If you flattened to JPEG before this step, the background is already baked in. Generate from the PNG master.
Sets that match the default ticks
- A marketing site that only needs a tab icon. Leave 16 and 32 on. You can turn the larger ones off if you do not want five downloads.
- A site someone will “Add to Home Screen.” Keep 180, 192, and 512 as well. Those are the sizes the defaults already check.
- A dense app icon with text in it. It will fail at 16 pixels. Crop to the symbol, drop the words, and generate again.
- A photograph used as an icon. It will turn to mud at 16 and 32. That is the pixel count, not a bug in the resample. Use a simplified mark.
Steps
- Crop to a square first if the artwork is wide or tall.
- Drop the PNG master here.
- Uncheck sizes you will not ship. The defaults are 16, 32, 180, 192, and 512.
- Download. Files arrive as
favicon-16.pngand the other sizes you left checked, one after another. - Put them on the site yourself and point the HTML at the files you actually uploaded. The generator does not edit your pages.
Frequently asked questions
Which sizes are generated?
16, 32, 48, 64, 128, 180, 192, and 512. The boxes for 16, 32, 180, 192, and 512 start checked.
Do I get an .ico file?
No. Each size is a separate PNG named favicon-SIZE.png. The page does not pack them into one ICO.
Does this upload my logo?
No. The resample and the downloads stay in the browser.
Why does the icon look blank at 16 pixels?
Sixteen pixels cannot hold a detailed wordmark. Crop to a simple shape and generate again. The larger 512 file can look sharp while the 16 file does not.
Why did several files download?
Each checked size is its own file. The clicks are staggered so the browser keeps them. Uncheck the sizes you do not need.
Will this write the link tag for me?
No. You place the PNGs on your server and add the link or manifest entries in your own HTML. This page only builds the images.
